In a surprising but exciting move, Apple has officially acquired RAC7, the small indie studio behind the popular Apple Arcade game Sneaky Sasquatch. This marks the first time Apple has ever purchased a video game studio.
The Vancouver-based developer is a two-person team, gained fame for their earlier titles Dark Echo and Splitter Critters, but Sneaky Sasquatch, launched in 2019 as part of Apple Arcade’s debut, became their breakout hit. The other two games are currently discontinued.
The quirky, open-world game about a mischievous Sasquatch has remained a fan favourite, especially among younger players. Apple now plans to support the studio from within to keep expanding the game.
“We love Sneaky Sasquatch and are excited that the 2-person RAC7 team has joined Apple,” said an Apple spokesperson in a statement to Digital Trends, which reported the exclusive news. “We will continue to deliver a great experience for Apple Arcade players with hundreds of games from many of the best game developers in the world.”
Apple considers this a “unique situation” and not part of a bigger gaming studio buying spree. Instead, the company sees it as a special chance to help a popular game grow while continuing to work with both big and small third-party developers.
