The UK Government has announced a major investment in the country’s creative industries, launching a £30 million Games Growth Package designed to strengthen the UK’s position in the global gaming sector. UK’s Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy revealed that a total of £380 million will be allocated to projects aimed at doubling private investment and creating thousands of high-quality jobs across film, music, and video games.
Lisa Nandy commented, “This investment will boost regional growth, stimulate private investment, and create thousands more high-quality jobs.” The Games Growth Package will provide £10 million annually over the next three years to support start-up studios and expand the UK Games Fund, helping young developers and early-stage studios bring their games to market.
A new industry-led UK Video Games Council will also be established, bringing together representatives from across the sector to work closely with government and the Creative Industries Council. The goal is to drive further growth and innovation in the UK games industry.
Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds emphasized the importance of the sector, saying, “The UK’s creative industries are world-leading and have a huge cultural impact globally, which is why we’re championing them at home and abroad as a key growth sector in our modern industrial strategy.”
Nick Poole OBE, CEO of UKIE, welcomed the announcement, noting, “Today’s announcement is both a validation of the huge cultural and economic impact of video games and an opportunity to show the world we are open for business.”
The package also includes £30 million to support start-up video game companies and an additional £30 million for the music industry, including increased funding for grassroots venues.
