  • Unity developers will soon publish their games directly inside Fortnite's massive ecosystem.
  • Unreal Engine will gain access to Unity's cross-platform commerce tools.
  • Partnership focuses on open systems to give developers more freedom and players more choice.

Unity and Epic Games have announced a major partnership. This collab brings an idea together that is simple but exciting: Unity developers will soon be able to publish their games directly inside Fortnite.

Since Fortnite already has a massive audience, this basically opens a new door for developers and gives you, as a player, even more variety to explore inside a game you already know well.

The announcement was made during Unite, Unity’s annual developer meetup, and another interesting reveal was also made. Unity is adding Unreal Engine support to its cross-platform commerce tools.

So if you are an Unreal developer, you’ll get more options to handle your digital items, storefronts, pricing, and everything else that keeps a game running smoothly across platforms. It’s a two-way exchange, and both sides benefit. Both companies discussed how the future of gaming should be open rather than locked down.

“We’re excited to partner with Epic Games to create more opportunities for game developers around the world. Choice and open systems create growth for everyone in the gaming ecosystem, said Matt Bromberg, President and CEO, Unity.

“Just like the early days of the web, we believe that companies need to work together in order to build the open metaverse in a way that’s interoperable and fair,” said Tim Sweeney, Founder and CEO of Epic Games. “Working alongside Unity we’re helping developers build fun games, reach bigger audiences, and find success.”

Tim also mentioned that Unity’s cross-platform payments SDK is heading to Unreal Engine at just the right moment, especially with mobile platforms beginning to open up to alternative stores and payment systems. More details are coming next year, but this already feels like a big win for developers and for you as a player.
