NetEase Games and development partner Everstone Studio have announced a major production milestone for their flagship open-world Wuxia RPG, ‘Where Winds Meet’, signing legendary action director and choreographer Yuen Woo-ping as the title’s Global Action Consultant.
Along with this appointment, Yuen’s world-renowned stunt and martial arts team, the Yuen Clan, has officially joined the production to spearhead advanced motion-capture sessions. The collaboration aims to bring Hollywood-grade martial arts authenticity and kinematic precision to the title’s expansive combat system.
Yuen Woo-ping is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in action cinema history. He has served as the action choreographer for era-defining films including Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The Matrix trilogy, Kill Bill, Kung Fu Hustle, and The Grandmaster, alongside directing martial arts classics like Drunken Master.
Everstone Studio is utilizing high-fidelity motion capture to record the Yuen Clan’s precise martial arts movements, which will be integrated into the game’s combat systems. You can expect the choreography to influence the execution of the game’s various combat styles, including swords, spears, dual blades, and distinct hand-to-hand martial arts forms.
A strategic move for NetEase’s global portfolio
From a business perspective, anchoring a major video game IP to a globally recognized cinematic icon like Yuen Woo-ping is a strategic play aimed directly at international audiences.
Securing the creative mind behind Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is a big win, to be fair. With this partnership, NetEase firmly establishes Where Winds Meet as an authentic cultural flagship for Wuxia media on the global stage.
The crossover appeals directly to both core gamers looking for deep, mechanically sound combat and mainstream fans of traditional martial arts cinema.
However, one thing to note here is that, including persons or oragnisations of this calibre is becoming a trend now, particularly among the Chinese studios. Just last month, we also saw Kuro games announcing a collaboration with Beijing Yuanyu Science Fiction Future Technology Research Institute to enrich Wuthering Waves’ world-building.
