In an effort to nurture the growing indie game development ecosystem in Latin America, Google has announced the launch of its $2 million Indie Games Fund, aimed at supporting small game studios in the region. This initiative not only provides financial assistance but also offers hands-on support to help selected developers build, scale, and succeed on Google Play, all without requiring them to give up equity.
Empowering Indie Creativity Across Latin America
Indie developers are at the heart of gaming innovation, often bringing unique ideas, diverse storytelling, and fresh gameplay experiences to players. Recognizing this potential, Google’s fund is designed to help small, independent studios in LATAM markets overcome barriers to growth, including funding limitations, market reach, and platform expansion.
Through this initiative, selected studios will receive between $150,000 to $200,000 USD each, along with strategic guidance from Google to help their games thrive on the global Android platform.
Who Can Apply?
The Indie Games Fund is open to legally registered companies located in a wide range of Latin American countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Uruguay, and others. To be eligible, the studio must:
- Have no more than 50 employees
- Be independently operated
- Own or manage a game that is either already published on Google Play or available on another platform such as PC, console, or other mobile app stores
Importantly, even if a game is not currently available on mobile, studios can still apply provided they intend to use part of the funding to port the game to Android and publish it on Google Play.
Focus on Quality and Growth Potential
At the core of the selection process lies an emphasis on high-quality games with strong growth potential. Google is particularly interested in projects that can make an impact on the mobile gaming market and appeal to a global audience through the Google Play ecosystem.
The funding must be fully dedicated to the development, growth, and enhancement of the selected game on Google Play. This includes expanding reach through Google Play Pass, the subscription-based service that allows players to access premium games without ads or in-app purchases. Participating studios will need to ensure that their game design is compatible with this model, which unlocks all content for subscribers.
Key Dates and Application Process
Applications for the Indie Games Fund are now open and will close on July 31, 2025, at 12:00 PM BRT. However, developers are encouraged to submit their applications by July 15, 2025, as priority consideration will be given to early submissions.
Around 10 studios will be selected to receive the funding and associated support. Each recipient is responsible for managing any taxes applicable in their respective jurisdictions.
A Step Towards Global Recognition for LATAM Games
The Indie Games Fund is part of Google’s broader commitment to fostering diversity and creativity in the global games industry. By targeting the often underrepresented but highly talented developers in Latin America, this initiative opens doors for innovative studios to scale internationally while retaining full ownership of their creations.
For many small teams, this could be a transformative opportunity, not just in terms of financial support but also through strategic exposure and platform partnerships that can fuel long-term success. To apply for this, please register first.
