During a recent chat show, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick emphasized the growing importance of mobile in the company’s long-term vision. On CNBC’s ‘Squawk Box’, Strauss explained that mobile bookings now account for more than 50% of the company’s business.
Referencing the company’s major move to acquire Zynga nearly three years ago, Strauss said: “The reason that we acquired Zynga nearly three years ago is because mobile is such an important part of the business. Today, that’s a little bit over 50% of our net bookings, and it’s going incredibly well.”
Strauss also believes it’s important to have a presence on mobile, as a significant portion of the market, particularly older and female players, are, as Zelnick puts it, “actively in the mobile business.”
He also emphasized that mobile isn’t replacing console or PC gaming, but complements them. “It’s not a migration,” he explained. “These serve different needs at different times and sometimes different populations.”
Looking ahead, Zelnick pointed to infrastructure as a key enabler for mobile growth. “More distribution, better distribution is always a good thing,” he said. The Take-Two CEO said it is especially helpful outside of the US, in growing markets where they expanding their presence, citing examples such as the Middle East, India and Africa.
As internet access and device quality continue to improve in these regions, Take-Two is positioning itself to reach players wherever they are.
