Roblox is stepping up its safety game with a major change coming later this year. By the end of 2025, every player who wants to use in-game chat or voice features will need to go through an age-check process.
This isn’t just typing in a birthday anymore; Roblox will use new tools like selfie-based age estimation, government ID checks, and even parental approval to confirm a user’s actual age. You must be 13+ with a valid government photo ID to verify your age.
The idea behind this move is simple: better age accuracy means better protection. Once ages are verified, Roblox plans to limit conversations between adults and minors unless they already know each other outside the platform.
Today we're announcing our plan to roll out platform-wide age estimation, designed to set a new standard for online safety. Learn more about the 100+ safety initiatives we shipped this year: https://t.co/KRIpYzwCVG

This helps block unwanted interactions and gives parents more peace of mind about who their kids are talking to online. Alongside the new safety rules, Roblox is also adopting a global rating system for its games.
That means players in the U.S. will now see the familiar ESRB ratings, while other countries will get their regional standards like PEGI in Europe or GRAC in South Korea. Parents will have an easier time deciding what’s appropriate, since the labels are the same ones used across the gaming industry.
These changes build on Roblox’s existing safeguards, which already include chat filters, parental controls, and strict moderation systems. With age verification and global ratings added to the mix, the company hopes to create a safer, more transparent space where players of all ages can play, create, and connect.
