Vince Zampella, the acclaimed video game developer whose work helped shape some of the most successful franchises in modern gaming, has died at the age of 55 in a single-vehicle crash north of Los Angeles. Confirmed by authorities and industry sources, the accident occurred Sunday afternoon on the scenic Angeles Crest Highway.

According to the California Highway Patrol (via NBC Los Angeles), a high-performance Ferrari veered off the winding mountain road shortly after exiting a tunnel and collided with a concrete barrier. The car caught fire on impact, and Zampella, who was driving, was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger also lost their life after being taken to a hospital.

Zampella’s passing has sent shockwaves through the gaming community, where he was widely respected not only for his creative vision but also for his role in advancing multiplayer and shooter genres.

Zampella Leaves Behind A Legacy

Zampella first rose to prominence in the early 2000s as a co-founder of Infinity Ward, the studio behind the Call of Duty franchise. Under his leadership, Call of Duty evolved from a promising debut into a cultural phenomenon, influencing the first-person shooter genre and selling hundreds of millions of copies worldwide.

In 2010, he co-founded Respawn Entertainment, which was later acquired by Electronic Arts. Respawn went on to create celebrated titles such as Titanfall, Titanfall 2, and the hugely popular Apex Legends, further cementing Zampella’s impact on both competitive and narrative-driven games.

More recently, Zampella took on a leadership role with projects in the Battlefield franchise under EA, bringing his creative insight to another landmark series in the shooter category.

Electronic Arts released a statement expressing deep sorrow over Zampella’s death
