HoYoverse has revealed a new direction for its artificial intelligence research, outlining plans to build what it describes as a “self-evolving autonomous AI civilisation.”
The announcement came through recruitment and technology event materials shared ahead of company information sessions scheduled for May 15 in Beijing and May 19, 2026, in Shanghai, aimed at master’s and doctoral students.
The company stated that it wants to create an “independent, self-governing AI civilisation” built on internally developed foundation models capable of evolving and developing autonomy in complex environments.
The AI Strategy Goes Far Beyond NPCs and Art Pipelines
The statement also reflects HoYoverse’s increasing investment in AI technologies over the past few years, especially across game development pipelines, NPC systems, and content generation. AI integration has been part of HoYoverse for a long while, and as time passed, they have implemented it across several upcoming and existing projects.
Earlier reports surrounding Honkai: Nexus Anima pointed toward hiring efforts focused on AI-assisted art workflows. At the same time, HoYoverse has showcased AI-powered development pipelines in collaboration with institutions such as Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

The company has also experimented with interactive AI NPC systems in Honkai: Star Rail, where early beta implementations reportedly received positive player feedback in China. Earlier this month, trademarks linked to the rumored Unreal Engine 5 fantasy MMORPG Nodusfall surfaced alongside another registration named Vassago, both connected to Anuttacon, a company tied to HoYoverse founder Cai Haoyu.
Alongside titles such as Honkai: Nexus Anima, Petit Planet, and the previously teased Varsapura, the studio appears to be developing multiple large-scale projects simultaneously.
At the same time, HoYoverse has also addressed responsible AI usage. The company recently issued warnings against unauthorized AI-generated voice replication involving its voice actors, stating that both company approval and artist consent are required for any AI voice usage. However, they were found hiring AI artists for their upcoming release a few months ago.
Ambitious Development Plans with AI Use
There are multiple takeaways from here, but it is clear that these developments show that AI continues to play a growing role in the company’s future game development plans. The experimental phase has been gone, and this is kind of full on implementation of AI now into the development workflow.
The timing is particularly notable as modern AAA and live-service games continue to become more expensive and also need a lot of resources to maintain. Here’s AI chipping in more like a shortcut before, but now, it has developed so strongly that it has taken over human work, also faster in almost all cases.
At the same time, the company’s increasing AI focus continues generating mixed reactions within gaming communities. Many are not a fan of what’s happening, especially as more large-scale publishers like HoYoverse begin expanding AI integration into mainstream game development.
But given HoYoverse’s eye for expansion and even spread of thought and knowledge with sessions like those mentioned, it is going to push for more automation. Whether it will be well-received by the audience and succeed in making the experience better will be something to look forward to.
